History of Wilton Golf Club
Wilton Golf Club was established in 1952 as part of the ICI Wilton Recreation Club. In its early years, matches were played at other venues until construction began in 1954 on a purpose built 9 hole parkland course, designed by renowned architect J. F. S. Morrison of Colt, Alison & Morrison, on land in front of Wilton Castle and funded by ICI.
The Club quickly gained recognition, highlighted by a memorable 1957 exhibition match featuring golfing legend Henry Cotton, watched by over 600 spectators.
Expansion followed, with the course extended to 18 holes in 1966, alongside the opening of a new clubhouse in 1967. Membership grew rapidly, reaching over 1,000 members by 1974, at which point the Club was closed to new applicants.
A purpose built clubhouse was completed in 1979 and has since been enhanced through ongoing refurbishments. In 1999, the Club secured its future by purchasing the course and buildings, becoming a member owned private golf club.
Today, Wilton Golf Club offers a mature parkland course framed by established trees and shrubs - a layout that rewards thoughtful play and continues to challenge golfers of all abilities.
